Dermaplaning at THE SPA at Laser + Skin Institute

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning, also known as Epidermal leveling, is a gentle form of manual exfoliation of the skin that resurfaces sun-damaged, dull, dehydrated skin.

Dermaplaning is a gentle medical skin treatment that is performed by using a surgical blade that gently scrapes the outermost layers of the epidermis, therefore, ridding it of dead skin cells, impurities and debris.

This treatment is an excellent way to exfoliate the skin and to regenerate new skin cells thus leaving the complexion smooth, soft and vibrant.

Here are a few things Dermaplaning does:

  • Reduces the appearance of light surface wrinkling
  • Smoothes acne scarring
  • Improves skin texture
  • Corrects uneven out skin tone
  • Helps to unblock blackheads
  • Reduces the appearance of enlarged pores
  • Removes fine facial hair (hair does not grow back thicker)
  • Generates new healthy cells
  • Enhances penetration of skin care products

Dermaplaning provides a non-invasive option for people with Rosacea who cannot receive microdermabrasion treatments.

Is Dermaplaning right for me?

If you have dull, dry, dehydrated and or congested skin, it is often because you have a surface barrier of dead cells that are not allowing topical products to penetrate. At the same time, impurities from within are trapped and, as well, underlying new cells are unable to surface. Once your skin is dermaplaned, it accelerates and aids in the sloughing off of the dead skin, that barrier is removed and the skin begins to respond to the skin products being used.

Also, it is able to expel the impurities from within creating a healthier and revitalized skin. Dermaplaning may also be used to reduce the appearance of acne scars. By skimming away the surrounding skin, the noticeable difference between the area levels is evened out.

How many treatments will I need?

Treatments only take about 60 minutes and regular treatments are scheduled about 3-4 weeks apart. Blading the skin actually removes about 2-3 weeks worth of dead skin cells.

Won't the hairs on the face grow back thicker?

No. The hair on the face is called vellous hairs and it is physiologically impossible to grow back thicker. There are two types of hair that grow on our bodies. Vellous (tiny translucent blonde hair) and Terminal (thicker hair that grows under the arms, pubic area, legs, eye brows, mustache and beard for men). Vellous hair when cut or removed will grow back the same. The structure of the hair does not become damaged, therefore it is impossible to alter. Terminal hair is physiologically coarse. When Terminal hair is cut, it grows back the same way…coarse.

Is Dermaplaning recommended for acne skin?

If you suffer from acne and an over production of the sebaceous gland, we do not recommend dermaplaning. Acne begins in the hair follicle and when the hair is removed it can aggravate or stimulate acne breakouts. For acne prone skin, we recommend Microdermabrasion, which is another form of manual exfoliation and will clear the skin and prevent the spreading of acne.

Is Dermaplaning safe?

Dermaplaning is a safe treatment when performed by a professional. All skin types and colors can benefit from derma planing or blading. Our Medical Aesthetician is highly trained and experienced in performing Dermaplaning treatments.

The treatment is safely performed using a #10 sterile surgical blade. While holding the area of skin taut, the blade stoked along the skin at a 45 degree angle. This quick, non-surgical procedure is pain free. There is no swelling or pain associated with the dermaplaning procedure. Most people say it feels good and there is absolutely no down time. The reason there is no pain with the dermaplaning procedure is because there are no chemicals used and the procedure is only taking off the dead skin cells that surface the skin.

What are the PROS & CONS of Dermaplaning?

PROS:

  • Non Chemical treatment, less irritating than chemical treatments.
  • Dermaplaning is more affordable than most chemical peels.
  • No downtime or redness.
  • The more often you get treated, the better your skin will appear.
  • Effective treatment that offers instant gratification.
  • Can treat very specific problem areas.
  • Reduce wrinkle appearance, “peach fuzz”, and manually exfoliates the skin.

CONS

  • Dermaplaning cannot be done as a do-it-yourself home treatment.
  • Skin may FEEL sensitive immediately after treatment, especially to heat.
  • Extra attention to sun protection is critical.
  • Like other manual exfoliating treatments, this is surface work that only addresses the top layers of the epidermis.
  • If you have deep frown lines or wrinkles caused by the natural breakdown of collagen, this treatment isn’t going to get rid of them.
